What is The Role of Roof Flashing Products in Protecting Homes?

Roof flashing products are waterproof materials used to prevent water leaks and damages. They are installed in valleys, joints, edges, roof penetrations, joints between roofs and walls, around chimneys etc, in short anywhere across the building if there are chances of water penetration. 

This type of protection is used along with radiation lead for commercial, residential and industrial structures. Manufacturers are providing effective and affordable products. These modern technologies have eased the work of construction workers and carpenters who used to build steps on the back and sides of the chimney or use birch bark.

Some parts of the roofs and exterior walls are particularly prone to leaks and water damage. These areas require extra protection, which the flashing materials provide.

The most common materials used in this regard are:
  • Copper: This metal is one of the most commonly used materials, mainly because of its strength, solderability, appearance, malleability and high resistance to elements. Contractors prefer this metal because it can be used easily in difficult to reach areas and in complicated ways.
  • Lead: The high levels of durability have made this metal a popular choice. Large amounts of the metal in the building could pose a threat to the environment, yet is a viable option for weatherproofing areas that are small in area. 
Other malleable metals like aluminium, zinc alloy, stainless steel and galvanised steel are commonly used in roofing. In a few cases, rubber is applied for plumbing vents or air ducts.

During severe winds, shingles are more likely to lift along the rake edges, where they don’t have the benefit of shingle overlap at the edge. Flashing at the edge would help in providing an extra layer of defence.
